Last summer, we ventured down south for a trip to Savannah and Charleston, two cities that I've been dying to see. Because of their proximity, we decided to spend a couple days in both places and drive between the two. Charleston was just as expected with colorful houses, horse-drawn carriages and some delicious food. Cheers to a perfect 24 hours in this southern charmer!
From Savannah, the drive to Charleston is about two hours. We left in the morning, so by the time we arrived we were ready for lunch. We decided to stop on the outskirts of town since we were already in the car and didn't want to worry about driving once we made it to our hotel. We pulled into Rodney Scott's Barbecue and the curb appeal already had me. A light blue and white exterior with red accents and wood piles made this place feel homey and welcoming, all while putting out a southern vibe. As we do, we tried to order a little of everything off the menu and it was all to die for! Brisket, ribs, mac & cheese, cornbread, beans, hush puppies, and banana pudding! Had some great local beer too because, let's be honest, if you're eating on a patio in Charleston in the middle of summer, a beer is required! With full stomachs we headed to our hotel on the upper end of King Street. As we do in many cities we visit, we looked for the nearest bike rental to see the city on wheels. Basically, all I wanted to do was ride around town and look at the houses and neighborhoods. While it wasn't the most bike friendly city, there were side roads and streets without much traffic that we could roll down the middle of without worry of going too slow or stopping traffic when we paused to look at houses. We rode all round King Street and made a pit stop at Second State Coffee to cool off before riding to the French Quarter and then South of Broad. Second State has delicious coffee and teas drinks-would highly recommend it for a quick stop! The houses in the French Quarter and South of Broad are picturesque and this was the easiest place to be with our bikes because it was a little quieter without all the people. Beware some of the cobblestone streets though as we had to do a little walking with our bikes in some parts of town. We dropped off our bikes back in the French Quarter and walked through the Charleston City Market. The shade provided some nice relief before heading to happy hour drinks and dinner. Our next stop was Henry's on the Market for a cocktail and live jazz. Ok service, good drinks, better music and a good spot to relax after being on our feet and in the heat for most of the day. Now it was dinner time! We walked to 167 Raw and got seats at the bar overlooking the kitchen. Whenever I have the chance, I LOVE sitting at seats like this because it gives you the chance to chat with locals, hear about their favorites around the city, and you can see all the behind the scenes food prep. There are always so many dishes we've tried solely because of how they look coming out of the kitchen and not based on the menu-can't go wrong there! This place was amazing! Every dish (especially the oysters) and every glass of wine was superb and I can't recommend it enough. I know most peoples' go-to place in Charleston is Husk and although I can't speak for it since we didn't go, I would absolutely go back to 167 Raw. After dinner we walked back towards King Street and our hotel. You could always hail a Lyft if you've had enough walking by now! One more pitstop before bed-Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams. I honestly can't remember what flavor I picked because we tried so many! With inventive flavors (each delicious) it was a great way to end the night. We basically planned our whole next day around food too, but to wrap up the 24 hours, the last stop I'd make in the morning is to Callie's Hot Little Biscuit. There are two locations, one of which was close to our hotel on upper King Street. We had a buttermilk biscuit with gravy, a biscuit breakfast sandwich and of course a blackberry biscuit for breakfast dessert! We had heard about this place through blogs and locals and it definitely lived up to the hype. Some of the best biscuits I've had! Well, there it is - We ate and drank our way through Charleston, all while checking out the local neighborhoods and houses. I hope you find it as charming (and scrumptious) as we did!
